Problem or solution?

Lack of focus is often taken as a sign of poor time and energy management and not prioritising tasks effectively.

Whatever the cause, I’m sure you know what it feels like – it’s horrible!

Your mind is all over the place, you can’t settle to anything and nothing ever gets finished.

You’re constantly flitting from one thing to another and feel like you’re drowning in a never-ending to-do list, with a sense of impending doom because something that really does need your attention isn’t getting it.

It’s an even bigger challenge if you’re a Creator profile on the Wealth Dynamics wheel because even at the best of times, things rarely get completed before the next amazing thing you could create occurs to you!

Did you know though that lack of focus is also ….

…. one of the most powerful (and very sneaky) ways we sabotage and hold ourselves back from success?

Lack of focus is rarely the true problem

… it’s often the symptom of an underlying problem.

What might that be?

  • The fear of creating something new, launching it out into the world and then …… nobody’s interested
  • Fear of achieving the success you want and ….. what if you can’t sustain it?
  • Or the fear you’ll be overwhelmed. You’re too busy already, right?
  • And what if somebody you love is envious and feels diminished by your success, how will that affect your relationship? (Often an issue for couples, siblings or close friends.)

The list of potential reasons to sabotage through lack of focus is endless and you will have your own unique combination of them.

So what can you do about it?

3-step process to recover your focus

What we habitually do is notice that we’re unfocussed and then beat ourselves up for it. But that doesn’t help, as I’m sure you’ve already discovered 🙂

Here’s a simple process to help you re-focus your mind, restore clarity and actually bring your projects to completion and your ideas into reality.

Do the steps in this order for maximum effect.

Step 1 : Ground your energy first
  • Sit quietly for a moment and notice where your energy is concentrated – most likely spinning up in your head with a lot of self-criticism and ‘shoulds’ swirling around.
  • Notice where you’re breathing from – most probably shallow breathing from your upper chest.
  • Notice where you’re holding any stress or tension in your body.
  • Now place your hands gently over your heart and focus your attention there.
  • Slow your breathing down very slightly, and put your attention on your breath, as you imagine breathing in and out through your heart for 2-3 minutes.

This will bring your heart, your brain and your scattered energy back into alignment and your mind back into a more resourceful place.

The process is known as Heart Focussed Breathing, developed by The HeartMath Institute, and it promotes heart/brain coherence, which calms the nervous system down and increases focus, mental clarity and creativity.

The beneficial effects of 2-3 minutes of HeartMath breathing have been shown to last for up to 6 hours.

That’s 6 hours of more mental clarity, creativity and focus.

For so little time and effort. Wow!

Step 2 : Be a detective

As you start to feel calmer, get curious about the benefits of your lack of focus. Ask yourself what being so scattered allows you to avoid. What does it get for you? What does it protect you from?

Or to put the question another way, ‘What’s the downside to allowing myself to have absolute clarity and focus right now? What negative thing might happen to me as a result?’

You’ll find there will be one (if not several) downsides to having clarity and focus, otherwise you wouldn’t be doing the unfocussed thing in the first place.

Once you’ve got your answers, you can begin to do the work to shift your energy and bring yourself back into focus and flow.

Step 3 : Clear the fears and reframe any unhelpful beliefs

How to do that? Use Tapping or any other mind/body tool at your disposal.

I highly recommend Tapping (of course) as it somehow manages to bypass the conscious mind and access the subconscious emotional mind, which is where all our blocks are.

Once you’ve removed the emotional ‘noise’ that’s been scattering your focus, you’ll have absolute clarity on what you need to do in any given moment, as well as the energy and enthusiasm to focus your attention and bring your ideas through into reality – in less time and with less effort.

Imagine how good that will feel!
