How many times have you said “That’s it! I’m sick of putting things off! I’m going get that website done if it’s the last thing I do!” … and before you know it, you’re tidying the stationery cupboard, reorganising your email folders and fighting the urge to eat biscuits (or whatever it is you do to stuff down unpleasant feelings).
Most of us have been there and it’s so frustrating!
Why is it so hard? Because …
Procrastination and self-sabotage are a solution to a problem at some level
Ask yourself “What would be the downside to completing this task or reaching this goal?”
If some part of you is running the belief that it would be dangerous for you to finish the website for example, because you might be criticised, your powerful subconscious mind (that processes literally millions of bits of information a second) will easily deflect your rational conscious mind (that processes a puny by comparison 40 bits of information a second) and have you doing a multitude of things that … maintain the status quo.
No wonder it’s been so hard! No wonder the words ‘motivation’ and ‘goal’ can conjure up feelings of strain and struggle. That’s no fun!
Here’s a tapping script to help you connect with your true desires and feel inspired to reach your goals, whatever they may be.
Tapping Script for Procrastination and Self-Sabotage
(New to Meridian Tapping? Look in the footer for an illustration of the tapping points. Abbreviations are as follows: KC = Karate Chop Point; EB = Eyebrow; SE = Side of Eye; UE = Under Eye; UN = Under Nose; CH = Chin; CB = Collarbone; UA = Under Arm; TH = Top of Head)
Before you start tapping, take a moment to bring your awareness right down into your body, into the present moment and connect with your goal. Notice any resistance you might feel. Where do you feel it in your body? Does it have a shape, colour, weight or texture? Rate the intensity of the resistance on a scale of 0-10 and focus on it while you tap.
KARATE CHOP POINT:
Even though I have this resistance to reaching my goal and I feel it it my (where do you feel it in your body?), I deeply and completely love and accept myself
Even though I have this resistance and I feel it in my (fill in the blank), I want to love and accept myself anyway
Even though there’s a part of me that’s holding me back, no doubt it has its reasons, I deeply and completely love, forgive and accept all parts of me right here, right now, I’m doing the best that I can
EB But it’s so frustrating!
SE I’m procrastinating again
UE I am disappointed in myself
UN Why can’t I do this?
CH Why can’t I get this done?
CB I’m so weak-willed
UA I’m beating myself up again
TH And I’m tired of feeling like this
EB All this resistance
SE And this part that keeps sabotaging
UE I’m so tired of feeling like this
UN All this resistance
CH I wonder if I could let some of it go
CB And replace it with feeling more hopeful?
UA I wonder what that would feel like?
TH I want to be open to a new possibility
Repeat the above a couple more times if necessary, until you start to feel a little more relaxed. Then continue with the positive phrases below:
KARATE CHOP POINT:
Even though there’s a part of me that’s striving to reach that goal, and another part that sabotages, and then I beat myself up, no wonder I get frustrated, I deeply and completely love and accept myself
Even though it’s been so frustrating, I’ve had a war going on inside, I deeply and completely love and accept myself and I choose to feel peaceful right now
Even though I’ve been beating myself up because I keep sabotaging, I deeply and completely love, forgive and accept myself, and I choose to do it all differently now
EB What if I could feel inspired to set my goal
SE And just be curious about the outcome?
UE What if I could release self-judgement and blame
UN Knowing there’s no failure, only feedback?
CH Even those sabotaging parts have a positive intent
CB And their feedback gives me valuable information
UA I love feeling inspired to work with those parts
TH And I can’t wait to see what happens!
Take a deep breath and notice how you feel now when you think about achieving your goal.
